Getting married in 2014?

It's the time of year when we're all thinking about our resolutions for the coming months ahead - and as a bride to be, what should you be contemplating?

10 New Year Resolutions For Brides To Be

  • Don't turn into a Bridezilla! The most important thing to remember is that you are marrying your soulmate and that you've both decided to spent the rest of your lives together. Although The Dress, the venue, the invitation list, the date, the bridesmaids, your colour theme etc etc play a part they're not the main event and certainly shouldn't cause friction between you and your fiancé. So keep in mind what's really important, communicate with one another and don't let wedding day stresses come between you.
  • Don't crash diet. Okay, so you want to look your very best on your big day but your fiancé fell in love with you - not a shadow of your former self. Eat healthily, do more exercise and lose a few pounds by all means - but don't let it become an obsession. You don't want to become a yo-yo dieter - you're really looking at changing your eating habits for the better for the future, so find a regime that suits you and you can stick to.
  • Create a wedding budget and stick to it. Apparently more couples argue about money than anything else and you don't want to start married life off heavily in debt. So work out together what you can afford and how you're going to split up the £s - and don't spend secretly without letting the other know. Guests who know and love you just want to be there on your wedding day - they won't care how lavish the venue is, how dramatic your gown or what quality of champagne you serve - and if they do, would you really want them there anyway? There are some great wedding apps out there that will let you keep track of your spending.
  • Book some time away for you and your significant other. In the run up to your wedding, it's easy to find that all you talk about is The Big Day and your wedding plans. To be honest, most men will suffer from a bit of wedding fatigue - so book a weekend away or a few days together and just be yourselves, and keep wedding talk off the menu!
  • Use all the free stuff that's out there to help you plan. I'm talking wedding apps here and free downloads. (Have a look at Dessy's free 'Will You Be My Bridesmaid' cards.) You'll be amazed at what you can find.
  • Let your bridesmaids have a say in what they are going to wear. It's very old fashioned to just present your girls with a dress in a style and colour you've chosen yourself - without bearing in mind what they feel will flatter them and make them look their best. Find your theme and then give your maids a selection of frocks to choose from and colours too - you could go for an ombre look, a rainbow look, brights ... Dessy has bridesmaids dresses in literally hundreds of different colour and style options.
  • Think about ways you can recycle and upcycle items you buy for your wedding. For example, the flowers you display in church could be transferred to your venue. If you don't want to splash out on buying a load of lanterns or table centres then investigate hire options.
  • Don't become a wedding bore. Don't let all you ever talk about be your big day. You were an interesting and fun person to be with before you got engaged and that girl is still there! If you do want to obsess about it, find a good online wedding forum or find a good wedding planner
  • Don't share everything on social media (see point above). You want to leave some surprises in place for your big day.
  • Think about DIY-ing some aspects of your wedding. Even if you've written yourself off as hopeless uncreative and unartistic, there'll still be something you can do - and DIY is a fabulous opportunity to save money and make your big day completely personal to you. Maybe take a flower arranging class, find a cupcake making day, or discover some quirky personalised favours. Even if you don't end up doing anything yourself, you should still investigate what's out there and you may surprise yourself!
